Check out the self-titled debut album by Fabio Rojas!

In his first album ever, Fabio Rojas explodes onto todays music scene with his own renditions of recycled classics as well as some recycled newer hits. The album opens with a reggae mix of the chart topping "Bitch". Fabio says, "sometimes that song really fits me. I try really hard to be nice to people, but deep down inside, I feel like screaming at them."

Many people are asking, "where did this musical genious come from?" He's a noname in the music industry. A mystery. One day Fabio walked into Sony Music off the street with a demo tape of himself singing "Roxanne", originally by the Police. (Which is also track 2 on the CD) "I had recorded it in my college dorm bathroom,"says Rojas. "I didn't expect anything, but the execs heard it and flipped."

What a surprise, especially considering the fact that Fabio was a student at Northeastern University in Boston. Studying computer science! What a leap!

"Not for me, it wasn't," comments Fabio. "Music has always been close to my heart. Growing up back home in the Dominican Republic, there was always music playing around me. As much as I wanted to work with computers, my musical side was waiting for the chance to come out."

After "Roxanne", the album picks up its tempo a bit with the Fine Young Canibals' "She Drives Me Crazy", and then ABBA's "Dancing Queen".

"It was a tossup between 'Dancing Queen' and 'Stayin Alive', by the Bee Gees," Fab says. "We literally flipped a coin to make the choice."

Rojas declined to comment on whether or not "Stayin Alive" would be on his next album, other than to say, "We'll see." What a treat it would be to hear Fabio grooving out that oldie but goodie.

The album slows down for track five, with "Wonderful Tonight", by Eric Clapton. Followed by "You've Got a Friend", by James Taylor. These two beautiful songs are lovingly performed by Fabio. "What can I say," grins Fabio, more than a little shy, "I'm a sap."

The album stays quiet with the classics "Stand By Me" and "When a Man Loves a Woman". Rojas really knows how to stir emotions with his voice. I don't speak spanish, but I'd guess that Fabio means 'voice of an angel' in Rojas's native tongue.

Fab finishes with a final classic pair. "The Gambler", by Kenny Rogers is always an introspective song. "I knew when to hold 'em", said Rojas, grinning impishly. He laughs heartily. "It is such a great song, though. How could I not include it on my first album. Kenny Rogers was one of those artists who you could ALWAYS hear in my house. He's very popular back in the Dominican Republic, and he's been a big influence on my musical style."

The closing song on the album is "Wind Beneath My Wings". We couldn't get a comment from Fabio about this song. When we mentioned it, tears nearly came to his eyes, and he just couldn't speak. What a powerful close to this great CD.

Fabio Rojas is not a model for romance novel covers. Instead, he is a software developer from the Dominican Republic. To be honest, this piece and a few others on my site are more amusing if you know Fabio. (While Fabio is a talented programmer, and a great person, he does not in fact have a wonderful singing voice, and does not convey the image of a pop icon.)
