Freshman year, my friend, John, and I got assigned to a room in Kennedy Hall at Northeastern University. (It's the Honors dorm. For really weird people.) We lived in a suite in a double, and there was this other guy, Josh, living in a single in our suite for the fall quarter. Josh had a refrigerator.
Josh said we could use his refrigerator if we wanted. Which was awfully nice of him, IMHO. Anyway, at some point early on in the quarter (like September), someone put a half-gallon of milk in the refrigerator. Around the end of October, beginning of November, Josh (we think it was Josh. Neither John nor I saw it happen) put the milk on top of the fridge. Probably as a reminder to John or I (whoever had bought the milk) to get rid of it, as it had an expiration date of september 28.
I think Josh originally bought the milk, but forgot about it. Neither John nor myself had bought it or placed it in the fridge. Well, noone took care of it. It just sat there. (Josh was almost never there. He was always at his girlfriend's apartment.) Regardless, the little time he was around, we never talked of it. And, of course, noone touched it. I didn't want to touch it, as it wasn't mine. John felt the same way. We're pretty sure Josh did, also.
And so it remained. Over Thanksgiving break. Over Christmas break, Josh moved out. The Milk actually stayed in our friend's closet over break so that residence staff inspecting rooms over the break wouldn't throw it away. For eight months it was in our room.
One day I returned home after spending the night elsewhere. The Milk was no longer with us. The previous evening, the Milk had disappeared under suspicious circumstances involving an air shaft bomb that gave off a distinctly powerful and unpleasant odor. John and Dan claim not to know what happened. I wasn't there. People have suspicions about that fateful night, but noone has proof.
So all that there is left is wonder. Who was Josh? What was the milk? We may never know.
