An introduction to MOOTWeb

MOOTWeb is a small, private MOO. MOO stands for MUD, Object Oriented, and MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon. Basically, a MOO is a text-based virtual reality. Participants in the MOO create characters, which they use primarily to communicate with other characters. A MOO also contains rooms, which the characters can walk between, and objects, which the characters can manipulate. When using a MOO, a user types commands that either communicate with other users, or perform actions. The results of these commands are displayed on the screens of all participants who can see the results.

MOOTWeb is short for MOO That We Built. It is largely a small experiment in building and running a MOO. Characters have the opportunity to experiment with building and programming in the MOO, while the wizards themselves experiment with setting policies and the administrative aspects of running a MOO. Mostly, the experimentation is secondary to socialization, however. Participants spend the majority of their active time communicating with the other participants.
