Research Interest

I am interested in developing health technologies for increasing communication abilities and opportunities for individuals with speech impairments due to Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, and Parkinson's disease.

Before joining the Personal Health Informatics program at Northeastern I developed health and communication technologies for developing countries.

Projects

SpeechOmeter (click here)
SpeechOmeter, a Google Glass application, improves speech clarity for individuals with soft and slurred speech due to neuromotor impairments such as Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and Parkinson's disease. SpeechOmeter provides individuals with visuals cues about their vocal loudness during daily conversation, allows them to alter their speech behavior, and sends clinicians adherence and performance reports to customize training.

Parho
This project is a news paper research for the illiterate and the disabled. It won the Ericsson-PTA Mobile Excellence Award 2011

Polly (click here)
This project is a voice based entertainment system for the low literate portions of the population of Pakistan. This project is in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University

iHealth (click here)
iHealth is a disease surveillance system, to detect outbreaks in the Muzzafergarh district of Punjab in Pakistan. This project is in collaboration with Global Viral Forecasting and University of Michigan.

FluBreaks (click here)
This is a Flu Outbreak system which provides outbreak information on flu through the US (140 cities, all US states and regions). We are collaborating with University of Michigan for this.

SMSall (previously known as Chopaal) (click here)
I was the Co-Founder of this service. We developed, Chopaal, as a social network over cell phones where people could send out a text message and multiple people of similar interests would receive it. With the initial motivation of disaster relief management, soon the endeavor was to provide similar social connectivity as facebook or orkut in a country where the Internet users are 10% of the total population and cellphone penetration is close to 70% of the total population. Chopaal has evolved into SMSall, a startup, which has sent over 4 billion text messages for 4 million users in Pakistan.
