At Mitch Wand's recommendation, I'm sending this announcement to this
list. I have also added pl-seminar to the NEPLS distribution. My
apologies to those of you who are seeing the notice for the Nth time.
We'll be over these growing pains soon.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleague,

I invite you to help initiate NEPLS, the New England Programming
Languages and Systems seminar, a regional venue to discuss current
research in programming languages and systems. NEPLS pays tribute, in
name and existence, to the successful series held in greater New
Jersey. I am writing you because I believe this series may interest
you. To be removed from this list, simply inform me by replying.

Initially, I think it best to imitate NJPLS's structure and content.
NEPLS would thus meet for a day, host 4-5 speakers, and feature new
and in-progress research for discussion, critique and constructive
feedback. Speakers and participants need not be regional; visitors
would be especially welcome.

To keep local arrangement concerns from strangling the series, I am
offering to host the first two meetings at Brown University. After
that, NEPLS should become a traveling event, especially one that
offers better access to people at schools far from the coast. For
now, Providence is well-situated, easy to access by road, rail and air
(and water!).

I propose we hold the first meeting in Fall, 2000. The week of Nov 27
(right after Thanksgiving) seems to be very popular. For reasons
peculiar to Brown, it's best to meet on a Thursday, but I am willing
to entertain requests for Wed (29), Thu (30) or Fri (12/1).

ACTION ITEMS:

1. Are all three days okay? If not, which ones can you make?

2. Please suggest speakers. You may volunteer yourself, or suggest
someone whom I will contact. Perhaps you've recently heard an
exciting talk by someone in this region or visiting it?

3. Do let me know whether you intend to attend. I need a head-count
   to make local arrangements.

I hope you will attend to help NEPLS get off to a strong start.
Please forward this message to others who might be interested.
They may contact me to be added to the mailing list.
