Math equations in Microsoft Word

You can also use Microsoft Word to edit mathematical equations. You need to have the Equations Editor installed - many pre-packaged installations have it as an option, so you may have to add it now. When you want to insert an equation in the text, in the Insert menu select Object.... If your Equations Editor is installed, the first choice in the dialog that appears should be Microsoft Equation. It will pop-up a frame with all kinds of math symbols and a place where to format the equation - you can then just copy and paste it into the text.

I do not use this feature much, so there may be some more effective ways to do this - try it and tell others what you learned.

LaTeX sample

Brad Osgood suggested that I post a sample LaTeX source for those that would like to learn to use it for writing homework solutions. The two files linked below provide the source for most of the Assignment 0 solution and the resulting pdf file. A good reference for using LaTeX that most people who use it keep on their desk is:

Leslie Lamport: LaTeX: A Document Preparation System, Addison Wesley (my edition is from 1994)
