The Basics Of MS Word.
How to use Word Help:
This exam is closed books, closed notes, but you
can use Word on-line help to get info on the topic you are not
sure about.
Editing facilities:
- Undo/Redo buttons
and lists;
- Copy/Cut/Paste commands;
- Quick move/copy/delete: select a portion of text
and either drag with a mouse (to move/copy), or hit BACKSPACE
key (to delete it).
- Spell check.
Formatting text:
To format text you should select it first. Than use
the Formatting toolbar for simple commands (Bold, Italic, fonts,
sizes), or go to Format/Font menu for more sophisticated
commands (change color, effects etc.)
Formatting a paragraph:
To format a paragraph put insertion point into it.
To format several paragraphs select them all.
- To center or otherwise align a
paragraph use the Formatting toolbar.
- To change indents, move indent markers
(triangles) on the Rule to desired positions.
Recall that the upper triangle determines the indent for
the first line in a paragraph, and the lower triangle
determines the indent for all other lines in the paragraph.
- To change line spacing or add extra
space before and/or after the paragraph go to the Format/Paragraph
menu.
- To put a border and/or shading
around your paragraph go to Format/Borders and Shadings
menu command. Also, you can use the Borders toolbar.
- To number or bullet the group of paragraphs
click on corresponding buttons on the Formatting toolbar or go
to Format/Bullets and Numbering command for more options.
- To set custom tab stops use the Tab
button to select the type of the tab, then click on the Ruler
where you want this tab to be. To move to the tab stop hit Tab
key on a keyboard.
Without any "angle symbols" (custom tab stops) the Tab
key moves the cursor by 0.5 inch. With those angle symbols placed
on the Ruler Tab brings the cursor to the next one. To
remove the custom tab stops darg them away from the Ruler.
Formatting a document:
- To set page margins either go to File/Page
Setup menu or drug the margins to desired length on the Rule.
- To create headers or footers go to View/Headers
and Footers command. Use tab stops there to make portions
of header/footer centered or right-aligned. Use Page Number/Date/Time
buttons to insert system (automatically updated) numbers, today's
date and current time.
- To insert a footnote go to Insert/Footnote
command. To go to the footnote choose View/Footnotes command.
To delete a footnote delete footnote reference mark.
- To insert a frame or a picture
use Insert/Frame and Insert/Picture. To edit a frame,
select it by clicking inside it, then click on the (thick) border
of the frame (little re-sizing handles will appear) and use Format/Frame.
To quickly delete a frame or a picture, select it and press the
Delete button.
