COM 1317 Transaction Processing Systems - Spring 2001 - Honors Adjunct

Professor Futrelle -- College of Computer Science, Northeastern U., Boston, MA

(Version of 3/26/2001)

The Honors Adjunct will be arranged in discussions between Professor Futrelle and the students involved. I am suggesting the following topics:

More and more of the database transactions in the world are taking place over the Internet. Our textbook contains a 35 page chapter on Security and Internet Commerce (Chapter 27) that goes into some of the critical aspects behind ensuring that transactions such as bank account manipulations and credit card sales can be done securely over the Internet. I will make copies of the chapter available for the Honors students, and that will be our starting point. There are some other interesting aspects of transactions on the internet that are not covered in the chapter. We can track these down by some enlightened searching and collection of materials from the Web. Examples are CGI and Servlet and CORBA access to databases. The goal will be to understand the relation of all these techniques to transaction processing, which lies at the heart of all properly structured interactions with databases.
