COM1204 Spring 2001 -- UML - The Unified Modeling Language

Introduction

UML is not so much a method for object-oriented design as it is a set of notations. The heart of UML are the various diagrams that it contains. Here, briefly, are links to some (cached) documents that describe the various notations and their uses.

• A good place to start is with class diagrams. Here is an excerpt from a single such diagram.



• Related to this is the simple technique of CRC (Class-Responsibility-Collaboration) cards. Yes, this actually consists of writing out descriptions on 4x6 inch index cards.



• Object interactions and sequences of activities are also included.



• Here's an OOPSLA '98 paper, " Structuring Specification of Business Systems with UML (with an Emphasis on Workflow Management Systems)" by Pavel Hruby. (not cached) Since it's an entire paper, it has many diagrams.



• This is " Object Oriented Analysis and Design Using UML" a whitepaper by Mark Collins-Cope of Ratio Group.



• Here are two papers in PDF format. The first (136K) is " Digital Sound Recorder: A case study on designing embedded systems using the UML notation" and the second (708K) is a 57 page paper, " Using UML for Modeling a Distributed Java Application". To quote from this second paper: "Because the example is complete and self-contained and provides methodical guidelines and hints, it can also be used as a tutorial for UML 1.0 and for object-oriented development in general."
