Rule-based and statistically-based theories, techniques and tools, all descended ultimately from the logico-mathematico view of Chomsky (1957). E.g., many current statistical techniques are focused on deriving the logical rules (grammars) that linguists think underlie language.
But there is a dearth of resources and work related to biological text. Activity in this domain has increased markedly in the last few years, e.g., at PSB and in this BRIE workshop. (Though medical text processing began in 1965: Sager, NYU)
